I found this old (2006 maybe?) acrylic sketch of a wolf, and it made me think of a time before everything i did took such a digital bent. I don't mind that; but this reminded me why I'm looking forward to some large upcoming real-media projects so very much.

A number of little exciting projects in the works that should be coming to fruition over the next few weeks. Keep that wolf from your door til then.

Escape From Monster Island

Escape from Monster Island is an ongoing project of mine, in which i ask the question: How effective would my favourite vehicles be in a potential monster-laden escape situation? The answer is usually, not very, but it would look pretty funny.

First up is the turn of the Exomus Goby, $40k's worth of adorable yellow submarine. Pros - it has three seats, and monster-seeking expeditions rarely number greater than this because I don't know that many intrepid explorers. Cons - it's REALLY yellow, which is cool and all, but not great for stealth, as illustrated.

Secondly, for land chases of the Hairy Scary kind, the Nissan Figaro. This is probably the most useless chase car ever, but one of my neighbours has one and I've fallen in love with its slightly naff retro styling. The pictured driver is Beth Jupe, because she is my radical monster getaway driver of choice.

Finally, for this entry, a rather generic looking Cessna. Light and speedy enough for your average Escape from small to moderate sized family groups of Bigmouths. Not recommended in the stormy seasons.

So, to give a context to my final degree show, I direct you to Shelley Jackson's website. I first came across Shelley's writing when I was 15, and it completely seduced me. One part magical realism author, one part bibliophile alchemist, one part excellent liar, I've recently come to realise that Jackson and her body of work have had a pretty crucial influence on the sorts of things I want to do with my own body (of work).

When faced with choosing a story to illustrate for my degree show project, her short story Sleep immediately sprang to mind. Taking cues from her text, I've made 5 posters/full page illustrations, and one artists book compilation of sketches that I've made on the way to that conclusion. The final two posters, and a photo of the book, will be posted after the private view at MMU.

Sleep is available to read online here, and a number of her other works are available online or via these booksellers.
